More reminiscing

It’s been glorious winter weather since the new year, perfect for taking photographs you’d think, but what with sore feet and a full family life I’ve taken very few and certainly not one that belongs on the front-page gallery. This week therefore I’ll reminisce about another 2024 trip that has more than one picture on the homepage.

Once a year I meet Andy in the hills and we try and drag our middle aged bodies up a few Scottish Munros, this years destination was Fort William. Home to Ben Nevis, one end of the West Highland Way and Skiing and Mountain Biking at Nevis Range Aonach Mor. Day 1 brought okay but not perfect mountain weather and we hiked up to the Summit of Sgorr Dhonuill, part of the Ballachulish Horseshoe. Day two was an improved day and we headed into Glen Nevis and up and around (most of) The Ring of Steall.

After parking at the road end car park in Glen Nevis the path follows the river into the hidden upper Glen Nevis, a wonderful alpine style valley and a worthy destination for the more relaxed tourist. From here you can cross the cable bridge at the base of the Steall falls and slowly climb up the steep incline into the hills proper and the glorious 360 degree views of the West Highlands and Inner Hebrides. We might have only climbed three of the four Munros before we opted to scoot down and catch last orders the the fish and chip shop and a drinker two in town.
